Hosting and Domain Names
Web hosting is basically a space you rent out from a server to store your web site pages. A server allocates to you a directory (or folder) that can be triggered by a user typing in your domain name (www.business.com). Once your domain has been entered a search begins on the World Wide Web for the directory that holds your Web Site Pages. Your domain name has been assigned to this directory by your server. Once it finds your directory it pulls up your home page

A domain name can be purchased through various registrars such as VeriSign, Regester.com and many other domain name resellers. In the process of a domain name being puchased the ownership, administrative, techinical, billing, and internet provider information is requested and then assigned to the domain name being registered. The internet provider is the hosting servers number address. It looks similar to this 10.34.45.103. This number is what links your web site domain name to your hosting space that contains the floder for your web site pages. Web Catchers Design can set all of this up for you so you don't have to.

Servers such as AOL, Earthlink, and Compuserve, offer a certain amount of free personal web space that comes with your internet connection package sometimes. The problem with personal web space is that often you can not collect form data (surveys, polls, client information) that are custom designed to your specific needs. A form script (command) is needed to have this information sent to your email and some servers do not permit the use of scripts on personal Web Site space.

Next, a domain name also can not be assigned directly to your personal web space supplied by a server. Users will have to type in a long URL (address) to get to your site. For example something like this:

In the web world of business this is not considered very professional. Not to mention users are very unlikely to remember your address. If you are serious about doing business on the Internet, we highly recommend a domain name and hosting.
